Cabinet Cutouts
A cabinet detail I’ve been drawn to lately that adds a ton of charm to every home are cabinet cutouts. These can be DIY’d into your existing cabinets. These can also be custom-made, or you can do a quick reversible, very affordable method of just using black vinyl and sticking it onto your cabinets to give you the look of cabinet cutouts. Cabinet cutouts are decorative, but they can also be very functional for ventilation. They’re perfect in mud rooms, maybe areas where you’re storing coats and shoes and anything that you want to air out a bit. Cabinet cutouts will allow your cabinets to breathe a bit and have air flow throughout. So they’re great for those functional spaces.
Where Cabinet Cutouts Work Best
They look great in homes that you really want to emphasize character. Cottage style homes, colonial, historic homes, anything that has a lot of charm already. This will take it to the next level when it comes to your cabinetry. Sometimes cabinets can come off a bit modern, and this is a way of adding a cute decorative touch to your cabinets. This can be done in many different shapes, sizes, and patterns. So you can really customize your cabinets to make them your own. It looks best on painted cabinets. There’s just something about it that brings the pattern out even more and it really stands out and looks super cute. If you’re planning on doing any kind of dramatic cabinets around your home, if you’re finishing out your laundry room or mud room, think about incorporating cabinet doors with cutouts because it’s going to give you that functionality. It can add so much detail to the vertical space around your home.
Stripes
When it comes to patterns, stripes have continuously caught my eye. There are so many ways of implementing stripes around your home and I think that it’s a trend right now, but I also think it’s very, very classic and completely timeless. So I think it’s something that will likely never go out of style. But I am noticing striped rugs, striped wall details, striped tile, which is incredible. There’s so many more permanent and decorative ways of adding stripes into your home, and it just makes for so much simple drama. It can really elongate the look of your room, make your ceilings look really tall, and it definitely adds a charming touch.
A Budget-Friendly Way to Add Stripes
I’m currently working on transforming our staircase in a very budget friendly DIY way, and I’m implementing a striped runner right down the stairs. It’s such a great way of implementing color into your home as well in a small way. If you’re doing striped tile, striped wallpaper, even striped paint, you can implement a small amount of color in a very impactful way. I love the way you can use a simple and affordable tile like a subway tile and make it look more custom and detailed by incorporating two different colors and putting it into a striped pattern. If you’re on a budget but still want that wow factor, this could be a really good method for you.
Dusty Powder Blue
A color that I’ve been absolutely loving this year has been a dusty powder blue, especially in a color drenched painted room. It’s such a calm, relaxing color, but it also is so impactful and timeless. It’s not really on the list of trending colors for 2025, as those were a little bit more burgundy, purpley, browns. This is kind of going the opposite way. I’ve been noticing it in decor, in upholstery, and rugs. It feels like this color that’s kind of coming back. And it is a classic color, so I don’t think it’s anything too trendy that you can do to your home. It feels fresh for the summer, but it also can lean cool and kind of cozy. If you’re looking for a color that’s going to be easy to pair with, a dusty blue would be perfect.
Solid Colored Rugs
Something I haven’t incorporated a ton of, but I’m really drawn to now are these solid colored rugs. It took me a while to hop on board, but they feel chic and classic and timeless. They also feel a lot more dramatic than a patterned rug. A pattern rug is very expected and it’s a way of introducing different colors, but going with one solid color rug feels more impactful and almost a more confident move. I love the rugs that have a bit of variation in them so that it’s not just one exact color. I like the rugs that you kind of lean in different ways and you can see it differently. But I think these are such beautiful rugs and you can find them online. I’ve seen them all over HomeSense and HomeGoods. So they are definitely out there.
They also work with every design style. That is kind of hard to find in a rug. These rugs can look very modern in a space and really emphasize that style, or they can complement that cottage historic style well because they can work well with existing pattern. So they’re such a safe but bold design decision when it comes to picking a rug. If you’re looking for a rug for your home and you’re struggling with the pattern and nothing’s really feeling right, maybe try a solid colored rug because it might be the thing that really ties your entire space together.
Hidden Doors and Murphy Beds
Something that’s been really catching my eye recently has been hidden doors. Bookcases that open up and they’re a regular functioning door. I’ve been noticing all of these manufacturers popping up everywhere producing hidden doors in different styles, different ways. It’s such a fun element that makes you feel like you’re living in a magical castle. Maybe you have a ton of doors in a room or a ton of doors in a hallway. This is a way of breaking that up, still incorporating that functional factor, but you can use a door as a decorative piece. I also think Murphy beds fall under this as well because they’re one of those magical hidden elements too. I love the Murphy beds that are super multifunctional. They can add so much to your home, especially for those rooms that you need multi-purpose in. If you haven’t thought about hidden doors or Murphy beds or any of these hidden elements, consider them for your home because it adds that little bit of charm, character, and customization to your space.
English Cottage Style: Delft Tiles
There’s something about the English cottage style that really speaks to me. I love how historic it feels. It also feels very timeless. It just feels charming and cute, like you’re living in a story book. And there’s one detail that I notice in English cottage kitchens, and that’s delft tiles. These date back to around the 16th century, and I think they’re coming back. I’m seeing them everywhere, popping up all over kitchen and bathroom design, and they add this playful, historic, handmade touch. These are hand painted tiles, typically 5×5, and they’re usually white and blue, but you can also get them in different colors as well. They usually have florals or geometrics, animals, even full scenes painted on them. And if you pick the right design, even if you just do the little corner designs, it really adds a ton of charm to your space.
I think it’s something that can be done tastefully in small areas of your home. You can use them on your backsplash, around your fireplace, or even on your bath and shower tile. They definitely suit that cottage style home. I think you really need charming elements already around your home to integrate these into, so that they feel like they’ve been there forever. They’re very historic. And they’re timeless. They’re not for everyone, but I really do think they can add a really cute, charming touch to a new space.
Tumbled Tile
Another tile detail I’ve been drawn to lately that you might like as well if you’re into that character, charm, aged look is tumbled tile. A lot of different tiles are offered in a tumbled version, which means the edges of the tile are not straight. You don’t get that straight edge perfect look. You get this purposefully aged, weathered look. It makes your grout lines look imperfect. It makes it look like your tile’s been there forever. And it’s actually a great way of hiding any kind of weathering that happens to your tile. It can definitely hide imperfections, but I love the tiles that have that texture, have that movement to them, because they feel a lot more handmade.
Pattern Upholstery
I’ve always been somebody that chooses solid colored upholstery for all of my large furniture pieces. This is usually done for longevity purposes. I want these pieces to last a long time. I want to be able to layer different pillows and throws and change the wall color and for my furniture to still work with that space. But there’s something about pattern upholstery on all of these furniture pieces that is really calling my attention. I want a pattern bed, pattern dining chairs, pattern accent chairs, pattern sofas. All the patterns are really, really cute and I think they could look very charming and make your space look extra special. If you’re bold enough to do pattern in your furniture, there are some really fun options out right now.
I’m loving the gingham upholstery beds, even plaid beds, striped sofas, striped accent chairs. They’re really cute, and layering more pattern into your space that way can make it look very decorative. I would really only consider this if the pattern is something classic like a stripe, a plaid, a gingham, or a historic looking floral pattern. You want something that’s going to look timeless, something that you could probably find at an antique store that’s still trending now. It can be a bit difficult, but they are out there and they are definitely on the rise. I’m noticing a lot more of it now, and I’m definitely hopping on board.
Scalloped Edges
Another detail that I’m loving because it really softens the space and makes your space feel a little less serious, a little bit more whimsical, is a scalloped edge. You can incorporate this into your paint, your bedding, your pillows, your rugs. There are scallop details everywhere now. If you want to soften up your space, make it feel a little fun but still timeless, a scallop detail really does the trick. Just adding a nice wood scalloped edge really makes your space look custom. You can also incorporate scalloping into your stone backsplash or tiles. If you want to bring some wow factor into your space, but also some softness and a whimsical touch, this is worth considering.
Pattern Lampshades
I’ve always suggested a white, cream, or ivory lampshade. It’s very easy to incorporate into your home. It brightens up your space, and it’s very easy to mix and match lamps if you have a consistent lampshade. But if you want to add a nice detail to your home and really make a lamp stand out, go for a pattern lampshade. These are becoming more and more popular. Some are a little hit and miss, but with just a cute gingham pattern around, it just feels super cute, cottagey, and brings in a tiny wow factor to a space. Even if you incorporate one lamp in your home that has a pattern lampshade, it will do the trick.
You can just swap out your lampshade. And you don’t need to go buy a brand new lamp to incorporate this into your home. You can wrap your existing lampshade with a fabric of your choice, or you can buy a brand new lampshade that has a pattern on it already. It’s a very budget friendly way of bringing this fun trend into your space, and it’s a good note to end on if you’re only ready to try one of these ideas at a time.
